Episode No. 9
Learning to Embrace Criticism with David Jones and Emily Sheehan
You can’t be precious about ideas. You have to share them, express them, and get feedback from the start.
In this episode of Owning Your Legacy, Laurette sits down with David Jones, the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Third Street Attention Agency and one of Edlong’s creative partners, to discuss how to embrace criticism and learn from it.
David has led his team to Addy and Clio award-winning work for various big-name brands. Notably, he was one of the masterminds behind the Coors Light cold-activated bottles and cans. With decades of ad-world experience, David brings innovative and out-of-the-box thinking to creative projects, along with solid business acumen—and, he’s faced his fair share of criticism over the years.
David shares that you can’t be too precious about ideas. You have to be willing to share and get feedback from the start to create an ongoing conversation rather than leaving it to a final “ta-da” moment that could end unfavorably.
Joining the conversation is Emily Sheehan, R&D Applications Manager at Edlong. Emily brings fresh thinking when it comes to our flavors product development, and has an optimistic perspective on criticism—seeing it as a constructive learning opportunity.
Whether or not you’re in a creative field, chances are you have received criticism at one point in your career. It’s up to you to embrace it—and decide what you can learn from it!
